A true kilo from our own claim in the Sierra Fría highlands of Aguascalientes — fire agate including main-vein pieces, plus thundereggs, botryoidals, and commercial grade pieces. Mined in Mexico and processed in the US. 

This is what the mine actually produces, sorted by hand and packed to a standard: every kilo carries a solid portion of quality fire agate, including main-vein material. The rest is the good company it keeps underground.

What's Actually in the Kilo

Quality fire agate — a guaranteed portion. Every lot is sorted to include a meaningful amount of top-grade cutting material. This isn't a lucky-dip where you might get one good piece. There's a floor, and we hold it.

Main-vein fire agate. Pieces pulled from the primary producing seam — not weathered surface float. More on why that matters below.

Thundereggs. Unremarkable on the outside, unknown on the inside until you cut them. Formed in the same rhyolitic volcanics as the fire agate, these nodules can open to agate banding, chalcedony, jasper, or crystal-lined pockets. Mexico is one of the world's great thunderegg regions, and these come out of our ground alongside the agate.

Associated volcanic rough. The rest of what the deposit gives up. Material to practice orientation on, to slab, to experiment with — and occasionally to be surprised by.

This is a mixed mine lot, we also offer hand-picked top-grade cabbing rough. Those are different products at very different prices. What we guarantee is the quality floor and the main-vein content — not that every piece is a showstopper.

Why Main-Vein Material Matters

Not all fire agate from a deposit is equal.

Surface and float material has weathered out of its host rock — sun-exposed, frost-cracked, knocked loose over time, often with the outermost fire layers already compromised before anyone picks it up.

Main-vein material comes from the primary producing seam, still protected in matrix. Intact botryoidal skins. Continuous fire layers underneath. That's what you want under a saw.

Many times, the rare colored flashes are embedded in the sugar-like formations surrounding the fire agate, the main-vein pieces are known for their rare inclusions.

We guarantee main-vein pieces in every kilo — and we can guarantee it because we're the ones who took it out of the ground. A reseller cannot make this claim about a lot they bought from someone else.

Why Sierra Fría Fire Agate Is Different

The rare end of the color spectrum. Fire agate's iridescence comes from thin-film interference — microscopic layers of iron oxide between layers of silica, the same physics that colors a soap bubble. Layer thickness determines color. Most fire agate worldwide runs red, orange, and gold. Our Aguascalientes material regularly produces the short-wavelength colors — green, blue, and violet — that most deposits simply don't make.

Sagenite. Select pieces carry sagenitic needle sprays frozen inside the chalcedony. Cut right, you get fire and structure in one stone.

A geographically tiny supply. Fire agate forms in only a narrow band of Tertiary volcanic geology across the American Southwest and north-central Mexico. That's the entire world supply. With classic Arizona localities like Deer Creek largely worked out, Aguascalientes has become one of the most important remaining sources of quality rough.
